Gentleness- the fruit of power
We had our cell group today and thank God for the wonderful time of fellowship, worship and discipleship. We did a new book on: "becoming more like Jesus" -by Michael M. Smith, in it, there is a question about identifying the weakest fruit of the spirit in my life.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control. Against such things there is no law." -Galatians 5:22-23
I wrote gentleness and peace. Okay...I do find it hard to explain gentleness, because it is not about the outward behavior or look but it is more of the gentleness of the Spirit. But I do have a good definition of gentleness from Elizabeth George, the author of "A young woman's walk with God". She said:
Gentleness...
--means to be lowly or humble
--is a form of self-control that Christ alone can give
--expresses itself in a submissive spirit toward both God and man
--is the opposite of self-reliant arrogance
--is the perfect quietness of heart. Never to be fretted or vexed or irritated or disappointed
--is firstly and chiefly towards God. It is the temper of the spirit in which we accept God's dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting...It is a humble heart which does not fight against God and struggle or contend with Him. This meekness, however, being first of all a meekness before God, is also such in the face of men...
Yes, in the eyes of others, gentleness may look like a weakness. But producing this fruit calls for the greatest of strength! Indeed, gentleness has been called "the fruit of power". And that's the strength and power that come from looking to God!
